Amherst Travel Guide
Welcome to Amherst!
Amherst, located directly northeast of Buffalo in Western New York, is a safe, suburban university town with much more to offer than just suburban sprawl. Exploring its streets, one will discover diverse communities, known as “hamlets”, which boast plenty of historic charm and early 20th century architecture. Formed in 1818, Amherst was named after an English lord and British Army Commander-in-Chief, Jeffrey Amherst, and its heritage is celebrated at the Amherst Museum where visitors can experience what life was like in the 19th century Niagara frontier town. Home to the University at Buffalo's northern campus, Amherst also offers a thriving academic, cultural and creative scene. The on-campus Center for the Arts is the town's premier performing and visual arts venue, while MusicalFare has brought dynamic musical theater to the area since 1990. Sporting three fine golf courses, including the reputable Glen Oaks facility, as well as scenic nature trails at the Great Baehre Swamp State Wetlands, Amherst offers opportunities for enjoying the great outdoors too.Tourist Attractions
